To clean a kitchen cabinet, the type of cabinet you have in your kitchen matters. For general kitchen cabinet cleaning, the following cleaning materials are essential:

  1. Water and detergent
  2. All-purpose cleaner
  3. Vinegar and water
  4. Non-abrasive All-Purpose Cleaner
  5. Baking soda and water

Painted Cabinets

Oil-based painted cabinets are durable and easy to clean. You can use any of the above-listed cleaning materials for this type of finish. There is no concern about damaging the finish, hence; all you need to do is scrub hard to rid it of the dirt and food items. Use water and baking soda if your painted kitchen cabinets have stubborn stains. 

You, however, should be careful if your painted cabinet comes with a water-based latex style of paint. Baking soda, for instance, might scratch off the surface. Instead of this, consider warm water and be sure to be gentle while scrubbing. 

Metal Cabinets

The easiest of the cabinets to clean are the metal type. You can use any of the above means to clean a metal cabinet, except a baking soda. Be careful not overuse water to prevent the obvious – rusting!

Wood Cabinets

An oil-soap wood cleaner is the best cleaning material to use for a wooden cabinet. You can get this at the local grocery or hardware store. Also, with everyday kitchen materials, you can also clean your wooden cupboards easily.

  • Detergent: Any grease or oil laundry detergent and water works well on wood cabinets. Just mix two cups of water alongside every cup of soap. Be sure not to over wet the wood because it can affect the finish. It is also important to wipe it down with a damp and separate cloth.
  • Vinegar: Without any liquid based detergent, you can use water and vinegar as a good alternative. With vinegar, you can get rid of sticky films as a result of dirty hands.
  • Baking Soda: When you have stubborn stains, baking soda is the best to get rid of it. Mix baking soda with water to have a paste, with a wet cloth wipe it cloth

Sometimes it can feel like we spend all of our free time cleaning. Especially, when we cohabitate with children, animals and/or a particularly messy partner. Creating quick habits that become second-nature helps to keep a clean, inviting home. Here are a few things that are (relatively) simple enough to do (almost) every day.

Put coats away in an orderly way. If you don’t have a closet in your entryway make sure there are hooks installed either to the nearest wall or schedule a weekend project to make a classy, stylish storage bench. Creating a storage bench has the added functionality of a place for everyone to stop and take their shoes off and even place them in a designated cubby underneath.

Wipe down counters daily. Even in the bathrooms. Keep disposable cloths or, for an eco-friendly option, a microfiber towel on hand to quickly wipe down surfaces. This not only keeps them crumb/gunk free but also keeps them cleaner for longer. Which means less elbow grease when it comes time to do your weekend deep clean.

Empty the dishwasher every morning and fill (and then run) it each night. Keep dishes off of counters and from building up in the sink. The sooner you get it in the machine the easier everything comes together so you can just hit “run” before heading off to bed. By allowing dishes build up throughout the day and then choose to load them we unwittingly create an enormous, daunting task.
Create a tidy way to hang towels after a shower. If you only have two hooks but multiple family members using the same shower it’s time for an upgrade. Hooks along the wall with frames overhead creates a stylish setup. For those lacking wall space, seek out an over-the-door hanger with more breadth to accommodate every family member.

Eat at your dining room table most nights. Life happens and sometimes we just want to kick back with takeout while binging on Netflix after a hard week. However, make this an occasional exception to a rule. Avoid spills, crumbs and piled up dishes throughout the house by keeping meals restricted to a table. This comes with the added bonus of spending quality time with your family catching up on the day's events before getting caught up in your favorite shows.

Use psychology and the senses to your advantage. Pull back the curtains and open the blinds, let in as much light in as you can! It brightens up the room and puts everyone in a great mood. And on that note, light some candles, diffuse oils or spritz some linen smells. Light, fresh scents make us feel like we are in a clean environment… even if you forgot to dust!

Wait, when was the last time you cleaned that ? And how often are you supposed to wash that? Never have to ask yourself these questions again by creating a monthly chore calendar. Creating a chore calendar may seem like you’re taking your house cleaning duties a little too seriously, but by creating a regular cleaning schedule you will set yourself up for success. And you’ll have a guaranteed cleaner home, and who doesn’t want that? Monthly

  • Scrub grout in the kitchen and bathroom.
  • Wash pillow and mattress protectors as well as duvet covers.
  • Discard any food in the freezer that has become freezer burnt or is past its time.
  • Wax any wood floors your home may have.
  • Dust fans you have throughout your home. Don’t forget to do this in the winter when they are not in use to avoid build-up.
  • Wipe down and disinfect light switch plates and door knobs.
  • Wipe down and disinfect your home phones and your family’s cell phones.
  • Flush drains. Try a natural solution by pouring baking soda down drains and allowing to sit overnight to deodorize. In the morning pour hot water down the drain to rinse the baking soda out and flush the drain.
  • Wipe down walls, doors and baseboards.
  • Check the fire alarms throughout your home and replace any batteries when necessary.
Weekly
  • Dust each room in your home.
  • Empty all trash bins throughout your home. Don’t forget smaller, less used baskets like in your child’s room or in the office.
  • Clean sinks, toilets, and bath of any soap scum or buildup.
  • Vacuum and mop the floors throughout your home.
  • Wipe down surfaces like tables and counters.
  • Clean mirrors and windows.
  • Wash sheets and pillowcases.
  • Sort through your mail and email inbox. Pay any upcoming bill and file paperwork as necessary.
  • Clean fridge out of any food that has gone past its expiration.
  • Wipe down appliances in the kitchen such as the microwave, stove, and toaster.
  • Wipe down and deodorize trashcans and recycling bins.
  • Put out fresh towels in your bathrooms and kitchen
Daily
  • Tidy up. Keep on top of clutter by putting items away when they are no longer in use.
  • Make the beds and if your children are old enough encourage them to make theirs.
  • Sort out mail. File and discard as necessary.
  • Clean up as you prepare meals to leave time to relax after dinner time instead of spending another hour in the kitchen.
  • Wipe up any spills as they happen to avoid having to use elbow grease to clean up later.
  • Sweep the kitchen floor and any other high traffic areas.
  • Throw in a load of laundry. If you have a large family make laundry more manageable by doing a load a day.
Keeping your home clean is hard work, there is no doubt about that, especially if you have a family. However, by creating a monthly chore calendar you can create a more manageable workload for yourself. With a little planning up front you can have a neat and tidy home you can sit back and truly enjoy!

When you’ve gone through the lengthy and tiring process of seeking out, bidding on, and buying a new home and then sell your home, the last thing you want to worry about is cleaning your old house before you leave.

 However, there’s multiple reasons you’ll want to ensure your old house is clean before you leave. First, as a common courtesy, you’ll want the new owners of your home to have a good first experience and to maintain your rapport with them after closing day. However, there are also legal and financial issues at play.

If your contract states that your home needs to have been “broom-swept” or some other form of cleaning before you leave, then your new owners could technically postpone closing. Furthermore, some states have laws requiring that homes are cleaned by their previous owners before they move out.

 Although it can be difficult to define just how clean a home needs to be, legally speaking, your best option is to do your part to leave the home relatively clean, whether that means cleaning it yourself or hiring a cleaning company.

Legal reasons for cleaning your old house

As mentioned earlier, some states state cleaning requirements in the purchase contract when you sell your home. Their definitions of clean can often be vague, but usually include sweeping floors, wiping down surfaces, stripping nails and hangers from walls, and carrying out all furniture and garbage.

These rules are mostly designed to protect people who purchase a home from getting stuck with bulk items and other surprise issues that they’ll have to pay for.

An exception to this is when your home is sold “as is” or when you have some form of written agreement between you and the new owner that some part f your home will be left as is.

Cleaning your house

The ideal time to clean your house is once you’ve moved everything out. However, if you’re moving over a long distance, you might not be able to return to the house once it’s empty to give it a final cleaning.

In this case, your best option is to have your furniture and boxes packed away neatly in the garage, or in the corner of one room. Doing so will allow you to sweep, clean surfaces, wipe down cabinets, and so on, while your belongings are still in the house.

Just be sure to keep a broom handy once you’ve put everything on the moving truck so you can give one last sweep of the floor before you say goodbye to your old home.

Cleaning checklist

It can be difficult to keep track of everything you’ll want to clean before you move out, so here’s a list to go by:

  • Sweep all floors

  • Vacuum all carpets

  • Wipe down cabinets, shelves

  • Try to sweep under appliances, oven, etc.

  • Spray sinks and tubs, leave air freshener in bathroom

  • Wipe inside of refrigerator, if applicable

  • Remove all nails from walls

  • Do a final walkthrough and remove any trash you’ve missed

Let’s face it, the daily traffic that the average carpet in your home endures is unbelievable. Owning a home is work, you must dust, vacuum, wash, launder and start all over again in a few days to keep up with living in your home. Is it just you living there or do you have a family or a dog? Do you have a welcome mat to stop the carpet traffic. If not, you should. Do you have a shoe off policy upon entering your home? Either way, follow this simple trick and you will be on your way to a cleaner smelling home in moments. One easy step to keeping up with the basic cleaning is vacuuming the carpets and removing any potential odor. Sometimes, the vacuum can’t remove such odors, you may need to go one step further to rid your home of that lingering odor. You need baking soda. Baking soda is one of those things that is over looked and thankfully under priced. Once the carpet has been vacuumed, spread a thin layer of baking soda on the carpet and let stand for 10 minutes. Vacuum again. This should make a big difference in the lingering odors in your home. Baking soda is a simple yet beneficial cleaning tip.
